Once upon a Time

Asturias preserves the most complete and homogeneous set of High Middle Ages architecture in Western Europe as a whole. Dated as belonging to the 9th century and the first years of the 10th century, its quality and magnificent conservation are unequalled. The architectural value, together with the extraordinary goldsmithery, develop a force comparable to that of other coetaneous so-called European “renaissances”, equalling the level reached by the Carolingian or Byzantine courts.

This arte constitutes the most important historical evidence of the historical roots and the original cultural traditions on which the Kingdom of Asturias was based. Twelve temples and three civil constructions are preserved from this legacy.
